Baby Steps into a Healthier Existence

Let’s face it, with ALL the (conflicting) headlines and the ever-changing recommendations, it may seem as if you just cannot keep up. Give yourself a break, and realize a healthier life style takes time. Don’t expect to change everything all at once. Pick 1-2 topics at a time and start with the easiest thing for you to change… Ugh. She said change. I love you, now change. Haha. Perhaps the reason it seems overwhelming is because you may start talking to someone who is at a expert level of bio-hacks, and thus their life may seem so extreme, intimidating or unattainable. You don’t get a black belt, the first day on the mat. You learn, you build and then you eventually feel as if it is all second nature to you. Where to begin? First what are the categories you are attempting to explore? Nutrition Sleep Exercise Home bio-hacks EMF awareness I think nutrition and sleep (effects of EMF on sleep) are crucial. Pick a poison and decide...

Is there proof EMF is dangerous?

EMF: Is there proof in the pudding? Are the dangers of EMF hype or are those who advocate such concern just paranoid? Like with mold behind walls, the problem with EMF and dirty electricity is that you cannot usually see or hear it, yet it may be causing health problems. What IF you could hear it, what would it sound like? Could you imagine having to listen to those sounds all day? Let’s start with the governmental agencies recommendations on radio frequency and EMF. Fact: The World Health Organization (May 2011) adds radio frequency radiation to the classification of IARC class 2B carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic), in the same category as lead and DDT. (That is, after dropping Ahlbom from the RF-cancer panel.) What is the basis for safety? These guidelines are set by measuring thermal absorption, known as SAR, Specific Absorption Rate. Mercola has a great article that breakdowns how the standards are set. Two key factors to note: these measurements were NOT done on humans, but rather...

Is EMF dangerous?

EMF: All Hype? A real concern? Or somewhere in between? Until recently, I didn’t even know what EMF or dirty electricity was. I wasn’t choosing to ignore the information; I just had never explored it, nor had heard anything about it. I had a realization about myself today… Upon learning more about electrical pollution, I felt that same sense of betrayal I felt two years ago with the food industry, wash over me. I wanted to talk about this stuff with my friends, with my family… anyone and everyone really. Nutrition, beyond the headlines, was extremely intriguing to me. When I first “woke-up” to how our food is made and processed, I am sure my friends would attest, I didn’t stop talking about it. I have a few (amazing) friends, who did a great job at humoring me, listening to me discuss all the findings I had learned about. These days, I don’t talk about my food choices; it really has just become a lifestyle for me. Unless...

EMF and Light Bulbs… Which Light Bulbs are the Best?

What are the typical types of light bulbs? Most are familiar with: incandescent compact florescent (CFL) and light emitting diode (LED) light bulbs. If you were like me, you have made the switch to those CFLs, aka, compact florescent lights. They were said to be more energy efficient. Sounds good. So, I swapped out my incandescent lights about 3 years ago. I also liked the color of the daylight bulbs, so got those. Honestly, at the time, I didn’t look into the research. I heard they were “better” and went with it… Well, turns out, those are NOT the best choice. Wait, what? Why? Actually, now that I think about it, who ever thought those horrid florescent lights in stores or office buildings were appealing? But yet, millions of consumers have brought them into our homes. And continue to do so, unaware of the potential health hazards. Here is an excellent post by emfstore.net on the dangers of CFLs. Please take a look, as I could not say...

EMF: Overview of How to Reduce Your Exposure

Instead of updating my previous, longer post on EMFs, I thought I’d share with you a more simple overview of all the previous information. I realize it was A LOT of information at once. And not everyone, as Ben Greenfield puts it, likes to “put on their propeller hat” and geek out. Whether you’ve given electromagnetic field (EMF) any thought previously, it seems practical to consider your overall environment. Perhaps your initial thought is, I don’t even know what EMF or non-ionizing radiation is, and who cares. We live in the 21st century, it’s not a big deal. Sure. I get it. Not sexy stuff. I used to be a heavy power-user. I do still use my iPhone and I am typing this on my MAC, but I have made slight adjustments to better protect myself. I use electronics, I am just more aware of how I use them. I cannot recall which expert reminded me of this biological fact, but the premise is, our bodies are conductors...
