EMF and Light Bulbs… Which Light Bulbs are the Best?

What are the typical types of light bulbs? Most are familiar with: incandescent compact florescent (CFL) and light emitting diode (LED) light bulbs. If you were like me, you have made the switch to those CFLs, aka, compact florescent lights. They were said to be more energy efficient. Sounds good. So, I swapped out my incandescent lights about 3 years ago. I also liked the color of the daylight bulbs, so got those. Honestly, at the time, I didn’t look into the research. I heard they were “better” and went with it… Well, turns out, those are NOT the best choice. Wait, what? Why? Actually, now that I think about it, who ever thought those horrid florescent lights in stores or office buildings were appealing? But yet, millions of consumers have brought them into our homes. And continue to do so, unaware of the potential health hazards. Here is an excellent post by on the dangers of CFLs. Please take a look, as I could not say...

Food: Looking Beyond The Package

self-a·ware·ness noun: 1.
conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires. 2.    an awareness of one’s own personality or individuality For some of us who subscribe to Clean Living and Clean Eating, it can at times feel alienating. Once you begin down the path of exploring and eliminating potential toxins and chemicals in your life, you are no longer in the “norm”. Everyday items that the majority does not think about are now looked at in a new light. I’d like to think I have enough self-awareness to not push my beliefs on others. My passion for wanting to be informed and informing others can be misconstrued as judgment or superiority. It can feel like a slippery slope. Say I read a study about the toxicity of BPA; I want my family and friends to at least KNOW about it. It isn’t about catching someone with their hand in the cookie jar, and scolding them; it is about being informed. “Hey, did you know that…” Knowledge can...

Plastic Alternatives. Avoid BPA. Eco-Friendly Products

As I continue to eradicate my life of plastic, I have found some great alternatives. My first plastic-free finds were glass bottles with silicon sleeves. I ordered a case of Aquasana. Got 6 bottles + caps and also got the 6 pack of colored silicon sleeves with matching tops. Which is great because each person can pick a color and that will be theirs! Lifefactory makes some too. I prefer the ones where you drink directly from the glass, so I choose the screw-off top versions. I also got a glass travel coffee mug. I love it. Unfortunately, it is sold out right now, but worth the wait. Hopefully it comes back. I checked their website and it isn’t on there either. And I just found this awesome Glass Tea Tumbler, I haven’t purchased it yet but I am a fan. Why? No plastic tea strainer. I do have a glass one currently but the tea basket does have some plastic surrounding the mesh. If I am pouring boiling...

Buying Sunscreen: How To Pick The Best Sunscreen.

About 3 years ago, one of my friends made the comment, “You’d be surprised by the ingredients that are in beauty products”… Well, I must admit, I didn’t look into it… until now. An interesting point that I found in my research is from the 1960s through the mid 1980s, the regulation of health, safety and environmental risks was generally stricter in the United States than in Europe. Since the mid 1980s, the obverse has often been the case: a wide array of European consumer and environmental regulations, including those governing GMOs, are now more restrictive than in the United States. In a number of important respects, European regulatory politics and policies over the last fifteen years resemble those of the United States between the late 1960s and the mid 1980s. They are often politicized, highly contentious and characterized by a suspicion of science and a mistrust of both government and industry. By contrast, the US regulation of GMOs resembles the European regulatory style of the 1970s: regulators have...

Food Packaging And Storage: What Are The Different Types of Plastics? What Do Plastic Recycle Codes Tell you? Guide to Understanding Plastics

Food Packaging And Storage: What Are The Different Types of Plastics? What Do Plastic Recycle Codes Tell you? Guide to Understanding Plastics

Upon hearing that BPA-free does not automatically mean safer, it lead me to research plastic a little further. BPA and BPS are typically found in in the plastic called Polycarbonate (PC). What types of products are made out of Polycarbonate Plastic?  Re-usable water-bottles, water cooler jugs, and CDs and DVDs are the ones we are most familiar with. Until recently, baby bottles and sippy cups contained BPA. In 2011, the United States generated almost 14 million tons of plastics as containers and packaging, aboutt 11 million tons as durable goods, such as appliances, and almost 7 million tons as nondurable goods, for example plates and cups. Only 8 percent of the total plastic waste generated in 2011 was recovered for recycling   After reading this article, it really made me think about the products I use. The research by doctors from California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco is part of a growing body of evidence looking at the negative health effects of BPA, a plastic hardening chemical found...
